The City of Cedar Falls Public Art Committee, under the direction and approval of the Cedar Falls Art and Culture Board, invites artists to submit proposals for a permanent public sculpture honoring Hugh Pettersen — an influential community leader, artist, and business owner — and celebrating the enduring legacy of the College Hill Arts Festival.
The selected artwork will be installed in Pettersen Plaza, a newly developed public gathering space in the heart of the College Hill district. This area serves as a hub of local business, cultural activity, and community gathering. Hugh worked his entire adult life on College Hill and was a longtime owner of the Henry W. Myrtle Gift Shop and Gallery. He founded the College Hill Arts Festival in 1979 and guided its growth and recognition that remained a cornerstone of the district until 2021. This commission honors both Hugh’s thoughtful, gracious, and visionary character and the vibrant community spirit of the College Hill Arts Festival he created.
Project Goals: The commissioned sculpture should honor Hugh Pettersen’s life and contributions, celebrate the legacy of the College Hill Arts Festival, reflect themes of creativity, community, inclusivity, and celebration, and serve as a meaningful and engaging landmark in the College Hill District.
