A mission to make the Mall at College Square in Cedar Falls a space for community events took the shape of a dedication on Memorial Day, May 25, 2026, when community members gathered to honor the fallen in a brief ceremony.
Two flags, dedicated to the sacrifice of two local servicemen — Donny Nichols and Travis Vaughn — marked the beginning of what is to be a permanent display of flags at the food court.
During the low-key ceremony, Chris Jung, a veteran who was deployed alongside Nichols in Afghanistan, made heartfelt remarks. Jung is also a member of the local family who purchased the mall in March, with the pledge to turn it into a community space. He recalled Nichols’ service and the lasting impact of his sacrifice.
“There is never a day that goes by where I’m not reminded of him,” Jung said of Nichols. “You hear the phrase, ‘never forget’ often when it comes to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. I know that those who serve with the fallen will never forget. How can we? I know that the family of the fallen will never forget.
“Our aim with this mission of Hero Hall is to make sure the public never forgets the sacrifices, brave men and women made in service to our country.”

Pastor John Farrell led the prayer. Bowing their heads in prayer were community members and also, representatives of veterans organizations.
Among them were Winston Crosby, a Cedar Falls veteran who, along with his wife Becca. He represents Ruck Iowa, an organization dedicated to outdoors activities and mental health for veterans.

Cedar Falls Mayor Danny Laudick also spoke about the importance of remembering the fallen.
Among the attendees was Roger Poock, the stepfather of Donny Nichols.

He said he was moved by the display of the soldiers’ memorial flags, and before he left, he took multiple photos of the Nichols flag.
“Just talking about it I get tore up,” Poock said. “I think it is wonderful what they are doing for the veterans.”
