Editor’s Note: Denny Bowman penned this tribute to KWWL anchor Ron Steele, who is signing off tonight, after 50 years of being the face and heart of local journalism. His impact on the community and the history of broadcast journalism is immeasurable. Steele’s last newscast was the 6 p.m. news on Feb. 27.

Fifty years, an Iowa legend.

His name is Steel(e).

Strong.

Durable.

Built to last.

Liz Mathis also worked alongside Steele.

But if it’s just the years, it’s empty.

This man filled his 50 by connecting with his co-workers and community and always making you feel valuable.

He wasn’t there when TV was invented, but as far as we can remember, he pretty much was.

Ron Steele, thanks for being someone that we can all aspire to be.

It has truly been an honor to work alongside you and continue to witness the difference you make in our lives.

We will miss you on our TVs (and other devices). I am thankful I was able to work alongside you for 10 years in the business at a time when I was just starting.

Linda Bowman, formerly Linda Hudwalker, was a reporter and a morning news anchor at KWWL. She is pictured here with Steele at a later date.

Have a great day at KWWL and stay safe out there. All the best from me and the countless others you have inspired along the way.

Thanks, Ron.
